There are several things to consider if you’re trying to decide whether to heat your water with a gas or electric hot water system. You may be looking at buying a new home and are wondering if the existing hot water system is right for your family. Or you may be renovating or changing out an old system, wondering which option is best.
f you notice a pool of water around your hot water cylinder, you may have a leaking hot water cylinder. There are a few signs that may indicate a leaky hot water cylinder:
water is dripping from or pouring out of the bottom of the cylinder
water is coming from the top or side of the cylinder
water is coming from one of the valves (temperature valve, drain valve, hot water cylinder relief valve)
water is coming from the cold water inlet and/or the hot water outlet connection
water is pouring from the outlet pipe – it is normal for this outlet to drip, but it should be no more than a small drip
water is coming out of a crack in the cylinder
Remember, it’s normal for hot water cylinders to emit a bit of water. But it should never be a steady stream of water or a constant leak.
Generally speaking, your hot water cylinder is a low maintenance appliance. When it’s working properly, you usually don’t think about it at all. In most instances, a hot water cylinder that is looked after will last for anywhere between 10 and 15 years. Some even last as long as 20 years, depending on how much hot water you use and how many people live in your household.
From time to time, however, you’ll encounter a problem with your hot water cylinder. Many of these aren’t serious enough to warrant a hot water cylinder replacement. Depending on what’s going wrong, simple hot water cylinder repairs may be all you need.
Let’s take a look at some of the most common hot water cylinder problems you may come across.
Did you know that there is legislation in New Zealand that determines and regulates how hot water should be in your home? Your hot water guidelines are governed by the Building Code
The temperature of water in homes and other buildings is part of the New Zealand Building Code, sitting under the plumbing and drainage guidelines for acceptable building standards.
“The Building Code sets clear expectations of the standards buildings should meet. It covers aspects such as structural stability, durability, protection from fire, access, moisture control, services and facilities, and energy efficiency. The Building Code states how a building must perform in its intended use rather than describing how the building must be designed and constructed.” The Building Code sits under the Building Act, and is enforced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
It is, therefore, a mandatory requirement by NZ government legislation to have the water in your home at the correct temperature.
