EMERGENCY PLUMBER AUCKLAND 24/7 – WEST AUCKLAND PLUMBER

The plumbing and drainage system in your property is quite complex – you have kitchen and bathrooms sinks, drains, waste disposal units, toilets, showers, a bathtub, laundry basin, washing machine, hot water cylinder, outdoor taps and drains, underground sewage and wastewater systems, gutters, downpipes … the list goes on.

So when something goes wrong in any of these areas, you may need to call in a plumber, gasfitter or drainage professional. Some of these concerns are fairly routine, but others are considered urgent and need an emergency plumber.

But how do you know if you have a plumbing emergency?

There are certain problems we consider emergencies where you need a plumber to come out quickly.

  • An overflowing toilet

If your toilet is overflowing, the first thing you want to do is try to stop the water. If you can, lift the lid off the tank, close the flapper and/or lift the float ball to stop the water. If you have another toilet you can use, then calling us out may not be an emergency. But if there is water overflowing or running in the blocked toilet, give our emergency plumbing response team a call.

Check out our advice for how to prevent a blocked toilet.

  • A water leak

If there is water leaking beneath a sink, near your washing machine, from a shower, or anywhere else in the house, you need to call in a plumber right away. Not only is this a sign that there is a problem in the pipes or drainage system that needs attention, but that leak may also be causing more serious damage to your home.

  • A burst pipe

You might associate burst pipes with winter and colder climates, but we do see them in Auckland sometimes. They’re the result of damage to the pipes that isn’t repaired or the age of a drainage system. A burst pipe can cause significant damage with a sudden, large volume of water gushing out. If this happens, shut off the main water supply and immediately call an emergency plumber.

  • Noises or banging sound coming from your pipes

If you hear strange sounds coming from the pipes at any time, that’s a sign that there is something amiss in your pipes or drainage system. It may or may not be an emergency, but it’s best to have it checked out right away. Give us a call and by describing to us over the phone what is happening and when, we can determine how serious the issue is and how quickly a response team needs to come out.

  • An unexpected loss of hot water

Running out of hot water is often the result of household members using all the hot water available with a hot water cylinder system. However, if you’re sure that isn’t the reason (there haven’t been many showers) or if you have a continuous flow hot water system, then the loss of hot water may be caused by a problem with your water heating system. While there may not be damage occurring (that is, there’s no water leaking or overflowing), you still want to have this checked out immediately. Faults with your plumbing or electrics, or with your hot water heating system, need to be checked straight away to make sure there is no risk to your health and safety.

  • A suspicious gas smell or hissing sound

If you hear hissing from your hot water system or any of your gas appliances, turn off the appliance. and then turn off the gas at the source. This is something you should learn how to do before a problem occurs.

If you are using a gas appliance with an LPG cylinder, you can use the valve on top of the cylinder to stop the gas flow. If you have more than one cylinder, all valves need to be closed to shut off the supply. If your property is supplied by natural gas, you can turn the gas off at the meter outside your home. Simply turn the valve on the main pipe from ‘On’ to ‘Off’. You may need a spanner to do this.

Then give us a call right away. As stipulated by WorkSafe NZ, any gas fitting work must be done by a currently licensed gasfitter – like the team at Sumich

  • A hot water heater that’s not working

Having no hot water is definitely an emergency. You don’t realise how much you rely on hot water until you don’t have it. This could be due to any one of a number of problems, so give our emergency response team a call and we can help right away.

  • A problem with your sewage or wastewater

If you notice bad smells coming from your pipes or drainage system, either inside or outside of the house, there may be a problem with your sewage system. Similarly, if the water isn’t draining properly in your sinks and drains, there may be a problem with how your wastewater is draining from your home. This isn’t something you can fix yourself. Give us a call and we can determine what’s causing the problem and help prevent it from happening again.

What do you do if you have a plumbing emergency?

The first thing to do is stay calm and do not panic. Laser Plumbing Te Atatu has an experienced emergency plumbing response team that is available 24/7 to help. We’re just a phone call away on 0800 437 021. If you describe to us over the phone what’s happening, we will determine whether one of our emergency response team is needed, and how quickly we can come out to your property.

The next thing to do is to try to minimise the problem, if you can do so safely, before your plumber arrives. We want you to do this safely because we don’t want you to cause anyone to get hurt, and we don’t want you to cause any further damage.

A few things to try while you wait for an emergency plumber to come out include:

Stopping a leak – Turn off any sources of water near the leak. If there are no taps on, then if possible, turn off the main water supply to your house while you wait for your plumber. You’ll usually find this located at the front of your property, normally on the boundary, often under a black lid.

Stopping a blockage – If you have a blocked drain or pipe, don’t try to clear it by putting anything else down the pipe. Before you call out an emergency plumber, you might try to clear the blockage yourself. You can find a few tips on how to clear a blocked drain yourself here.

Clearing a blocked toilet – If you want to try to clear it yourself, we’ve provided a few easy steps you can follow here to clear a blocked toilet. We find that clients usually prefer to call us out to do it – the last thing you want to do with a blocked toilet is make it overflow even more causing a mess and possible damage to your flooring.
